Goodbye to My Beautiful Eddie

So today, after a long break from my blog, I wanted to explain why I've been quiet...

I talked about it on Instagram, already, but... two months ago (on Dan's birthday) we found out some devastating news. We were told that our beautiful nine-year-old British shorthair cat, Eddie, had cancer. Until this point, there wasn't one clue he was ill, especially not that ill. One minute he was eating his breakfast and purring, the next he was suffering the effects of incurable cancer and struggling to breathe. And after just two weeks, we had to make the heart wrenching decision to say goodbye to him. Whaaaaaat? It was one of the worst days of my life, and has been surprisingly disorienting, emotional and hard to accept.

Honestly, the grief I have felt losing Eddie has been every bit as painful as losing my mum in 2001. Writing is a solitary job, especially if like me you work from home, so Eddie was the third member of our family. He was my constant companion, my best friend – in fact, I pretty much spent more time with him than my husband (!). A lovely or pathetic situation depending on how you look at it! Some people have said 'Oh, he's just a cat, get another one!' But that's not how it works, at least not for me...

Eddie was a gentle soul, with a sweet, quirky character; a cat like no other. Even my non-cat loving friends adored him. So it will take time to get over it. But today, as I emerge slightly from my slump for the first time since February, I thought it would be nice to share some photos to celebrate his beautiful, sleepy, fluffy spirit... I miss you Eddie sitting on my desk and hiding in unusual places around the house!
